About Sakrebyle Elephant Camp

Elephants are an important part of Indian history and culture. These gentle, grey beasts are seen in our art, architecture, and forests; from stone sculptures of elephants to the use of Asian elephants in countless battles of the past. The Hindu God ‘Ganesha’ bears the head of an elephant and this demonstrates the country’s reverence and love for the true royalty of the forest.

Karnataka has a large population of elephants and as eco-tourism initiatives have risen in the past few years, efforts have been made to rehabilitate captive elephants, training and caring for them in their old age. The Sakrebyle Elephant Camp located at a distance of 14 km from Shimoga on the Shimoga- Thirthahalli Road is considered one of the best camps for training elephants in the state. Carefully maintained by the Karnataka Forest Department, the camp is a hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts and tourists from across the country.

The camp is home to elephants from across Karnataka that requires attention and special training. Some of the elephants may need training or care due to illness, behavioral issues, deficiency in nutrition, lack of proper care, etc. Elephants that are uncontrollable and need to be retrained are also brought to the camp to be managed by the experts at the camp.

At the Sakrebyle Elephant Camp, guests can wake up early in the morning and watch the elephants being scrubbed in the glistening water of the River Tunga. The sight of the elephants as they enjoy the water rolling off their massive, grey sides is an experience unlike any other. These bathing sessions can last for 2 to 3 hours. Experienced mahouts care for these gorgeous beasts, and elephants of all ages can be found in the camp. For children who love learning about wildlife, watching the wild animals drink from their watering hole before heading to their feeding area where they gobble up their food is a dream come true. Elephant rides are also a part of the attraction of this unique wildlife camp and are an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

The camp offers cottages and tented accommodation so you can live amongst the elephants as you learn and care for them. A green, vibrant space on the banks of the river, spending your day walking around the wooded lanes as you connect with nature is also a fun activity.

What customers are saying:

  • It was a lovely stay. Very beautiful atmosphere and tasty food. There were lots of activities for kids.
  • The elephant camp is what everybody comes to see, but the birding experience is amazing at SEC. Like other JLR properties, this one too is very well maintained and efficiently run by Mr. Vasant and his team. Very courteous and helpful staff. And the cottages were perfect for unwinding in the wilderness. They have a small bird hide which attracts quite a few birds to include Indian Pitta, Yellow-browed bulbul, white-browed bulbul, Orange rock-thrush, White-bellied munia, blue-capped thrush, Brown cheeked fulvetta, Tickell's Blue Flycatcher, Blythes starling, Orange-headed thrush to name a few.
  • Nice place to stay. Wooden cottages are a little smaller than other jungle lodges but are well made and you will enjoy your stay over here. The whole campus has dense vegetation and you will get the feeling like you are in the jungle.
  • The elephants are really fun to interact with and it’s great to see the baby elephants play around in the water. The jungle lodge is very well maintained and relaxing.
  • The staff was very courteous and service-oriented. The nature walk and morning trek was good. The staff took us to the elephant training area and it was amazing to see how these gentle giants can be trained by a fleet of mere men.
  • The itinerary on their website was followed perfectly. A staff member accompanied and guided us on the herbal garden tour and birding. We could spot many species of birds and quite a few giant red squirrels, deer, and peacocks. One can also take a stroll to the surrounding Nakshatra and Rashi Vana.
