About River Tern Lodge

Located on the edge of the Bhadra Reservoir in Chikmagalur district, River Tern Lodge is an oasis for wildlife and bird enthusiasts, creating an eco-tourism space to enjoy the beauty of untamed nature. Around the lodge, the backwaters of the river ripple in the background, and the sound of the water as it flows is a soothing noise as you explore your surroundings. In the Western Ghats, the River Tern Lodge was named after a nearby island. During their breeding season, hundreds of river terns flock to this lush, green slice of land. Their white feathers are a beautiful contrast against the emerald and brown of the landscape. One of the key delights as a guest of this lodge is spotting the river tern as it flits from tree to tree or quenches its thirst with the waters of the river.

Hop into a jeep safari during the cool evenings and make your way to the Bhadra Tiger Reserve just 4 km away from the lodge.  This carefully conserved forest is a natural habitat for leopards, tigers, gaurs, elephants, crocodiles, deer, wild boars, monitor lizards, and more, so make sure you carry your binoculars to spot these magnificent beasts as they thrive in the region. If you’re an ornithologist, keep your eyes open to spot over 200 species of birds including the Grey Junglefowl, White-rumped Shama, Racket Tailed Drongo, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Brown Fish Owl, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle, Osprey, White Bellied Sea Eagle, and of course, the River Tern.

The River Tern Lodge Bhadra is also located close to the Sakrebyle Elephant Camp in case you’d like to interact with the Asian elephant, the royalty of the jungle! Apart from the variety of wildlife around the lodge, this jungle stay is a relaxing haven on its own. Kayak on the river and take in the surrounding greenery and birds. Feel like taking a refreshing dip? You can also go swimming with a guide or watch the sunset on a boat. All water-based activities at this lodge are supervised by trained experts and adhere to stringent safety guidelines. After a satisfying day frolicking in the water or sighting the rich wildlife in the Western Ghats, you can return to the homely Gol Ghar to end your day with a delicious meal. The buffet serves tasty vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, prepared fresh and hot for even the pickiest foodie to love.

What customers are saying:

  • We stayed there for two nights And trust it was one of the greatest experiences of our lives The staff there are too nice.
  • We had a fantastic experience here. The view from the room, the accommodation, the food, courteousness of the staff, the facilities - all were top notch. Jio works well here. I'll surely be visiting this place again.
  • JLR is the crown jewel of eco-tourism. The food and accommodation are excellent. The chef used to stand there in the buffet and seek feedback, he even shared some recipes with me. Very cordial and warm people. The jeep and boat safari are very exciting, it's time well spent.
  • The log cabins by themselves were quite nice; they were clean, spacious, and had a balcony with spectacular views of the reservoir. The staff was extremely nice and helpful and the food was quite good; standard JLR stuff.
  • In terms of activities, we were completely occupied during our stay with water sports, jeep safari and boat safari. While the boat safari and water sports gave us a chance to enjoy the Bhadra backwaters, the highlight of the trip was the jeep safari. Never in my previous multiple safaris have I spotted so many animals in the wild and the icing on the cake was to spot the big cat - TIGER.

River Tern Lodge FAQs

What clothing should I bring with me to the camp?

Here are some tips on what clothing to wear when visiting the camp:

  • Dress for comfort, avoid bright colours and stick to muted shades of green, black, grey and brown. The more you blend in with the background, the better.
  • Don’t forget to carry your hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and torch.

How do you reach the camp by road?

The resort is about 283 km from Bangalore.

Which is the nearest railway station?

The nearest railway station is at Tarikere and Shimoga, which connects Bangalore and other major cities.

What is the best season to visit River Tern Lodge?

The best part of this enchanting jungle stay is that it’s a pleasant place to visit throughout the year. From June to September, the sanctuary comes alive, lush and green with fresh leaves unfurling. The summer months from March to May are a little warm, however this makes it the perfect time for water activities and long safari rides in the evening as the sun cools.

Is there an in-house restaurant at the camp?

Yes, there is an in-house restaurant at the camp. Each package comes with buffet meals, however you can purchase extra meals at the camp.

Is it okay if I carry plastic items to the camp?

We try to avoid plastic items as much as possible at the camp. If you do bring any plastic items, ensure you don’t litter and carry the plastic back with you.

How do you reach the camp if you’re arriving by air?

The nearest airport is the Bajpe international Airport in Mangalore which is around 195Km away from the resort.

Does the package include 2 safaris?

Yes, the package is inclusive of one jeep safari as well as one boat safari. The first safari happens between 3:30 PM- 6:30 PM on the first day. If you don't get the chance to spot too many animals on the first day, you'll have another chance the following morning from 6:30 AM- 8:30 AM. If guests opt for the jeep safari on day one, then the boat safari will take place the following day, and vice-versa.

Is it worth visiting the River Tern Lodge, Bhadra?
